Chalk Kids About Page

Hello, hello! I’m Steph, a blogger, freelance writer, compulsive coffee drinker and mother to two wildlings, Finlay (3) and Parker (1). I grew up as an expat in Hong Kong and Japan before finishing my secondary education back here in the UK. I’ve always loved writing and decided to pursue it at university where I graduated with a Joint Honours Degree in English, Journalism & Creative Writing. Soon after we made the leap and moved to London, where I worked as a freelance writer and editor (in between other retail jobs that required me to dress in florals and polka dots).

On New Year’s Eve, 2012 two pregnancy tests confirmed my husband and I were expecting our first baby! We welcomed our son, Finlay into the world in September ’13 whilst we were based in Kingston-Upon-Thames. Two years on in October ’15, baby Parker joined the gang. Currently you’ll find us way up north in Scotland, where we’ve had to invest in some seriously thick winter coats.

With two young boys, it is often a little crazy in our home. Our families are still abroad and are currently based in Singapore and Dubai where we love to visit each year. We also try make regular trips to Edinburgh, which often includes a visit to the Sunday market in Stockbridge. Otherwise we try make the most of the stunning sandy beaches and countryside right on our doorstep.

It was stumbling upon the store Cissy Wears in 2013, that first inspired me to create Chalk Kids. Pregnant at the time, I had no idea this whole other world of kids fashion and style – outside of baby blues and pinks – existed! I instantly connected with Nicola’s store and thought, why not start a blog sharing all these unique brands and their stories with other new mums on a similar journey.

But creating Chalk Kids wasn’t all about stylish kids fashion and inspiring interiors. I wanted to create a positive spot where I could connect with other like-minded mothers and share all the fun (and eye-rolling) aspects of young family life. There have been times where I’ve felt a little cut-off as a new mum, especially with moving from one new city to the next. But through blogging and Instagram I quickly found an incredible community who are always there to offer advice, no matter what the hour #teamupallnight

So please come say hi on Instagram or feel free to browse through some of the many stories we’ve published here on Chalk Kids. I’m so happy you’ve stopped by! You can read more of my personal posts here
