It’s been a while since I last posted a pregnancy update, so today I thought I’d share how the last few weeks have been. I’m now 29 weeks and officially in the 3rd trimester! I keep saying it, but this pregnancy is flying by compared to my first. I think this is due to the fact that second time round you simply don’t have the time to focus on being pregnant, as your first born commands all of your attention. I’m always surprised when I get an update on my phone announcing I’m another week on and baby is now the size of an eggplant, butternut squash, cauliflower…
I don’t know if other mama’s have found this, but I’ve enjoyed not counting down the weeks and wishing them away like I was guilty of doing first time round. It’s not that you’re less excited to meet your new little one, but I think you realise how fleeting a time pregnancy really is. I remember after having Finlay occasionally missing my bump and that incredible companionship you have with your unborn baby – so this time round I’m trying to appreciate it all and take it all in best I can.
So what else has been different second time round?
The constant heartburn… Omg! With Finlay I only got heartburn in the last couple of months, but this time I’ve had it basically from the beginning. Some nights I’m woken up by it and I find it hard to get comfortable again.
Tiredness… I know the second trimester is supposed to be the magical trimester, but personally I struggled to find any energy some days. Typically I’ll have one or two “good days” followed by a “crash day” – so I tend to take advantage of Finlay’s nap times and go for a nap myself if I can spare the time.
Less midwife appointments… I’ve been going every 6 weeks instead of 4 as per NHS policy for second time mums. I find they’re quicker too and much more of a routine to simply tick the boxes. I’m ok with this, as I find juggling Finlay at these appointments, whilst trying to get blood pressure taken etc. quite tricky. I can’t count how many times I’ve heard the comment, “you’re going to have your hands full…”
Bigger bump… I feel like my bump is a lot bigger with this pregnancy. First time round it took forever before anyone noticed I was pregnant and I measured two weeks behind at all of my MW appointments. This time however, I started showing a lot earlier and so far I’m measuring right on track! This scares me a little, as Finlay weighed 8lb 10oz at birth!
Movements… With Finlay I didn’t start feeling kicks until around 21 weeks or so (I remember being gutted about this as I so desperately wanted to feel something). But this time round I noticed movement from as early as 14 weeks, which I couldn’t believe. I think it’s helped me feel a lot more relaxed with this pregnancy, as feeling those movements early has helped reassure me that all’s OK in there.
Gender… We were surprised that we found out the gender of our baby at our 12 week scan. I was measuring 13 + 5 and our sonographer was very confident about the sex of our baby, which she also showed us on the screen. I couldn’t believe how detailed it was compared to my first scan with F, which was very blurry. Of course, there was a chance she could have been wrong, but in our case our 20 week scan backed up what she suggested. Like before we’re keeping gender a surprise, but I’ll admit that I guessed wrong!!
So far we’ve hardly bought anything for baby H (we basically have everything we need baby gear wise from last time). But the urge to nest has well and truly kicked in. I’ve spent the last couple of months decluttering and reorganising our home. It started with the nursery! Above are some sneak peeks of the progress I’ve made so far, but I’ll be sharing an updated nursery tour post very soon. I’ll also be sharing my personal wish-list for baby no. 2 and some third trimester must haves. So there’s lots still to come!
I hope this little update has been interesting and not too rambly! If you’d like to follow more about my pregnancy I’ve been sharing the odd snippets on my personal IG account. Thanks so much for reading!
